LaserTouch software suite

Turns the readings of a laser rangefinder into Windows multi-touch events: touches on a projection are indistinguishable from touches on a physical touch screen.

How it works

The program sits on the computer of the installation and runs in the background, in the system tray. The application on the screen knows nothing about the lidar: it receives ordinary pointer events.

  • Connection to the lidar

    Hokuyo UST-10LX and UST-20LX over Ethernet, the SCIP 2.0 protocol, automatic reconnection

  • Calibration in three steps

    matching the angle of the surface to the angle of the screen, an arbitrary outline of the working area, a test mode

  • Processing the scan

    subtracting the reference background, picking out touches, following them between frames with stable identifiers

  • Injecting touches

    through the standard Windows API: for the system and for applications this is ordinary touch input

Operation

    logging only, an overlay with circles for the contacts, real touches

  • Installation profiles

    several named sets of settings, switched from the system tray

  • Protection against failures

    a hotkey for an immediate stop, a limiter on the rate of events, a limit on the lifetime of a touch

  • Recording and playback

    scans are written to a file: an incident can be examined and a fix checked without travelling to the site

  • Lidar simulator

    development and testing without the physical device
