App for biometric turnstiles — ITLF 2026

About the project

The “Fare payment and biometrics” app, made for “Transport of Russia — 2025”, ran for a second time on the Moscow Transport stand — at ITLF in St Petersburg on 1–3 April 2026.

On 1–3 April 2026 the Expoforum Convention and Exhibition Centre in St Petersburg hosted the first International Transport and Logistics Forum (ITLF). The Moscow Transport Complex presented its projects there — from a driverless tram and metro train to next-generation turnstiles and fare payment by face recognition.

In the turnstile zone our “Fare payment and biometrics” app was running — the same one we made in November 2025 for the Transport of Russia exhibition. For the forum the video captions carried new figures.

The screen in standby mode: at the top, a call to come up to the turnstile and look into the camera; in the centre, a shot of a woman passenger at a metro turnstile; below, a caption about data protection
Standby mode: “Biometric payment has bank-level security, all data is encrypted”

The task

To repeat the Transport of Russia scenario on a new stand: a guest comes up to the turnstile, looks into the camera and sees on the screen how the system recognises their face; the rest of the time the screen talks about biometric payment and invites people to come over. By spring 2026 some of the figures in the captions were out of date.

What we did

The “Fare payment and biometrics” app

It runs on a vertical screen behind two turnstiles — in the same two modes as at Transport of Russia.

In standby mode, captioned videos about biometrics on Moscow transport play, with a prompt at the top of the screen: “To use biometrics, come up to the turnstile and look into the camera”.

In scanning mode, the guest steps onto a light marker on the floor between the turnstiles, and their face appears on the screen in an oval with a scanning animation.

Captions with figures for spring 2026

Three captions in the idle-mode videos were updated with figures for spring 2026: “More than 800 thousand users have registered in the system”, “Used over 200 million times since launch”, “In 2025 biometrics went live at every turnstile of every metro and Moscow Central Circle station”.

The screen behind the turnstile glass: a shot of passengers in the metro and the caption “More than 800 thousand users have registered in the system”

How it is built

Just as at Transport of Russia: the Unity app receives video from the camera and looks for a face only within a set zone in front of the turnstile, so it is not triggered by passers-by.

Result

The app was installed and running on the stand on 31 March 2026, the day before the forum opened, as the video from that day shows. The forum ran on 1–3 April 2026.
