SSJ100VR — a VR tour of the SSJ-100 cabin

Exhibitions / SSJ100VR — a VR tour of the SSJ-100 cabin

About the project

A virtual tour of the business version of the SSJ-100 for Irkut Corporation: six viewpoints in the cabin and cockpit in daytime and night-time lighting, and a “Smart Cabin” menu. It ran at EEF-2022 in Vladivostok.

The 7th Eastern Economic Forum took place in Vladivostok on 5–8 September 2022. Irkut Corporation (part of UAC) showed a VR stand of the SSJ-100 cabin there: a guest puts on a headset and explores the interior of the aircraft in its business version. The stand was part of the “Far East Street” exhibition, in the Khabarovsk Territory pavilion, in the zone devoted to the region’s aircraft building and shipbuilding; the SSJ-100 is built in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

We made the VR app for the stand: we shot and processed 360° panoramas in the cabin, built a 3D scene with the aircraft in a hangar, designed the interface, added animation and sound, and programmed the transitions between viewpoints and the “day — night” modes.

Scope of work

A VR tour of the SSJ-100 cabin: 6 viewpoints, day and night

Venue

The task

To let forum guests and potential customers walk through the cabin of the SSJ-100 business jet as if they were on board: climb the airstairs, look into the cockpit, explore the VIP cabin, switch on the lights, lower the blinds and learn about the aircraft’s equipment. All in time for the opening of the forum on 5 September.

What we did

Idle scene

While nobody is wearing the headset, it shows a 3D hangar with the SSJ 100 BJ business jet: airstairs at the open door, a 3D “UAC Irkut” logo and camera fly-throughs. The guest selects the airstairs, climbs to the door and enters the aircraft.

Cabin panoramas

Six viewpoints — from the entrance door with the galley and the cockpit to the VIP cabin with seats and a table, the sofa area and the washroom with a shower. The guest moves between viewpoints using markers. Each viewpoint exists in daytime and night-time lighting, with a smooth transition. The windows show the sky outside, and videos play on the cabin screens.

The VIP cabin by day: seats, a table, windows with blue sky
Panorama at the aircraft entrance: on the right a door with an “Exit” sign and the galley with a coffee machine and sink, on the left the open door to the cockpit

A narrow passage between wood-panelled cabinets and a worktop, with the cabin seats at the end
The service area: the passage along the cabinets to the cabin
The business jet cabin by day: light-coloured seats, wooden partitions, a screen with a landscape on the wall, the next cabin zone in the background

“Smart Cabin”

An in-cabin menu with the sections “Lighting”, “Windows”, “Multimedia” and “Internet”. The guest changes the lighting, lowers the window blinds and turns on music; the panel shows a cabin plan with the VIP area highlighted.

Information labels

Labels about the equipment pop up above parts of the cabin — “Wireless charging” by a seat, “80 litres — vacuum water system” in the shower room — along with windows showing images.

How it is built

The 360° panoramas were shot in the cabin of a real aircraft in the VIP version: six viewpoints, each with a daytime and a night-time panorama, 17228×8614 pixels.

The app was built for Android and Windows. The contract required at least 40 frames per second and at least 1920×1080 pixels per eye.

The stand had a VR headset with two controllers and a screen mirroring what the guest sees in the headset.

Result

The VR stand ran at EEF-2022 on 5–8 September in the Khabarovsk Territory pavilion. The UAC press office: “Forum guests and potential customers can explore six viewpoints inside the aircraft, as well as interactive elements of the cabin design”.
