“Chita during the Great Patriotic War” — a touch panel about Heroes of the Soviet Union

About the project

An application for the multi-touch panel of the “Chita during the Great Patriotic War” exhibition: a list of Heroes of the Soviet Union connected with Transbaikalia and a card with a portrait and biography for each of them.

In August 2022, Sirius Group LLC commissioned us to create an interactive installation for the “Chita during the Great Patriotic War” exhibition — that is the name the exhibition has in the contract. We did not make the exhibition as a whole. Our part was an application for a multi-touch panel about Heroes of the Soviet Union whose lives were connected with Transbaikalia.

The work took a week: the contract was signed on 29 August, and the work was accepted on 5 September 2022.

The task

What was needed was an interactive installation on a multi-touch panel with information about heroes of the Great Patriotic War. Under the cost estimate, we were to provide the screen layouts, the transitions between them, image galleries, the build and testing — within a week, by 5 September.

What we did

Main screen

At the top is an introductory text: during the war more than 126,000 people from Transbaikalia went to the front; they fought on almost every front, from the defence of Moscow in 1941 to the storming of Berlin in 1945, and at Stalingrad they served in the 87th, 116th, 304th, 311th, 321st and 399th divisions. Below it is a scrolling list of the names of Heroes of the Soviet Union. Archive photographs from the war years appear along the edges of the screen.

Recording of the panel in operation on 6 September 2022: the list of heroes and the cards of Nagayev, Kurochkin and Mitin

Hero card

The visitor touches a name, and a card opens over the list in a frame that looks like an old photograph. It holds a portrait, the name, rank and a short biography. Yepifan Nagayev, commander of a machine-gun platoon of the 282nd Guards Rifle Regiment, kept directing the battle on 28 September 1943 although wounded, and repelled three counterattacks. Gavriil Mitin served and lived in Transbaikalia; on 16 November 1941 he fought off attacks at the Dubosekovo railway junction as one of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. Pavel Kurochkin commanded the 17th Army of the Transbaikal Military District from February to June 1941. The “Back” button returns to the list.

How it is built

A horizontal multi-touch panel on a stand. The list is scrolled with a finger, and a card opens with a touch.

Design: a dark background imitating old plaster, light-coloured names, archive photographs with torn edges, a light-coloured hero card.

Result

The client accepted the work under a signed certificate on 5 September 2022. The next day, 6 September, the panel was filmed: the video and the stills on this page come from that recording.
